A sight and at the same time landmark of Budapest, which you should not miss, is the Parliament building. It is the seat of the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest and was built at the millennium of the founding of the Hungarian state.

Whether from the water or from the land, the building is stunning!

It is located on the Pest side, right on the Danube bank at Kossuth Lajos Square. At 96 meters, the Parliament is the tallest building in both Budapest and the entire country, next to St. Stephen's Basilica. It is also considered the second largest parliament building in Europe and the third largest in the world.

The construction of the Parliament was planned after the unification of Buda and Pest in 1873. The construction of the building began at 1885. The construction works were finally completed in 1904.

The Parliament building was designed by the architect Imre Steindl in the neo-Gothic style and therefore has many towers and gables. However, Renaissance and Baroque elements can also be seen.

But not only from the outside the parliament building is very impressive! It is definitely worth a visit or a tour of the building. The building is also very imposing inside. Everywhere are golden decorations, murals and frescoes. These represent the history of Hungary and reflect the neoclassicism.

There are regular tours of the Parliament, which last about 45 minutes. During these tours, visitors are guided through the Parliament and get a lot of background information from the tour leader. These insides are super interesting! In addition, visitors have the opportunity to visit the domed hall. There the crown of St. Stephen and the Hungarian imperial insignia, the crown, the scepter and the orb, are exhibited. Furthermore, the session hall and the common room of the upper house can be visited, which is also super interesting! Also, in the antechamber of the meeting hall, the largest knotted carpet in Europe can be seen. In addition, the grand staircase can be marveled at

As a grand finale, the museum of the parliament can be visited. In it the memories of the Hungarian parliamentarism are gathered. There are four permanent exhibitions, which are located on 1,700 square meters of exhibition space. A special highlight of the museum is the original of the big red star, which was placed on the dome of the parliament building between 1950 and 1990.
