In this post we're going to show you a few of the beautiful churches from Budapest and the famous synagogue. They all have a rich history, a special architecture and are spread all over the city.
1. St. Stephen's Basilica

First we will start with the most famous, biggest and most gilded church in Budapest "The St. Stephen's Basilica". This is a Roman Catholic basilica named after the first king of Hungary "Stephen". This church is the home of the mummified hand of the first king, as well as the venue of great choir and organ concerts all year long. Equal with the Hungarian Parliament building, it is one is of the two tallest buildings in the city. Locals just call it the "Bazilika". We would definitely recommend you to visit it during the winter, because organ concerts take place almost every Monday, Thursday and Friday in the evenings. It's located in downtown Budapest, on St. Stephen Square, surrounded by a lot of nice restaurants and cafés.
2. Matthias Church

The Matthias Church, or Church of Our Lady, is since the 16th century the coronation church of Hungary. It's also called after an Hungarian king, namely king Matthias Hunyadi. It's famous because of two things. The first this is the historical wall decor that creates a really special atmosphere for every visitor. Second, it has this beautiful location next to the Fisherman's Bastion in the Buda Castle District. You're able to visit the Buda Castle, The Fisherman's Bastion and the Matthias Church in one afternoon! We believe these are definitely a few of the most spectacular places of Budapest.
3. Cave Church

Next, a really special church that is built into the rocks and caves of the Gellért Hill "The Cave Church". It is inspired by Our Lady of Lourdes in France, but is does not has any special decoration. That's why this church and its simple form seems solely to serve and worship. It's less famous than the previous ones, but definitely worth visiting! A church in a cave is not something you see everyday...
4. The Synagogue

Last but definitely not least, the Great Synagogue in Dohany Street! This is the second biggest synagogue in the whole world and has about 3,000 seats. For the ones who don't know the difference between a church and a synagogue, a synagogue is a Jewish church. Budapest also has other synagogues, but this is really the most beautiful one. It has a Moorish exterior with amazing geometrical patterns and a unique atmosphere.
